“Soul crushing.” That’s how Dr. Jane Buckner, president of Seattle’s Benaroya Research Institute, described the current moment for scientists, who have seen federal research grants cut, scientific work scaled back and federal review of their research delayed.

In the first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s administration, hundreds of active research grants have been canceled or threatened nationwide. Now, the administration might propose deep cuts to the Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes of Health and other federal health agencies.

Buckner was speaking last month at Life Science Innovation Northwest, Seattle’s marquee gathering of the biotech industry. Most years, the two-day conference sees scientists, investors and others involved in the region’s $41 billion biotech industry dish about the latest discoveries and collaborations for treating diseases and improving health, while making deals, scoring jobs or just getting some good advice.

Gestalt Diagnostics, a Spokane, Wash.-based healthcare startup, has raised $7.5M to enhance its artificial intelligence tools for digital pathology analysis.

Gestalt’s technology aims to improve cancer detection, allowing for real-time collaboration between health providers and pathologists and faster diagnosis.

The new funding will support efforts to reach more customers, improve the tool’s AI capabilities, and aid in the pursuit of Food and Drug Administration clearance. The digital analysis technology is increasingly important, the startup notes, given the rising cancer rates and declining number of pathologists.

“We’ve already streamlined how pathologists navigate fragmented systems by creating PathFlow, a unified platform for viewing pathology cases digitally and collaborating with leading experts in real-time without the need to ship specimens,” Gestalt CEO Dan Roark said in a statement. “Now, we’ll accelerate innovation and scale our reach to meet the growing demands of modern pathology.”

Days after the Department of Health and Human Services canceled contracts for an historic women-focused health initiative, the agency appears to have reversed itself and is restoring funding.

“These studies represent critical contributions to our better understanding of women’s health,” Andrew Nixon, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services, told NPR.

The National Institutes of Health launched the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) in 1991 and more than 161,000 women participated in early studies. Some 42,000 women aged 78 to 108 are currently enrolled in WHI research and have been involved with the project for decades.

WHI is led by Seattle’s Fred Hutch Cancer Center and includes four regional centers: Stanford University, University of Buffalo, Ohio State University and Wake Forest University in North Carolina. The centers learned a week ago their contracts would end in September, and Fred Hutch could continue operations until January 2026, “after which time its funding remains uncertain,” the WHI said.
